Access to clean drinking water is a cornerstone of health, yet millions of Filipino children from low-income households struggle to survive hungry and unwell due to waterborne diseases. In a country regularly hit by an average of 20 typhoons each year, natural disasters further contaminate water sources — making safe water even harder to obtain.
A Small Packet with Big Impact
To address this challenge, Procter & Gamble (P&G), in partnership with World Vision Philippines, introduced a remarkable solution called Purifier of Water — a powdered water-purifying mixture that transforms unsafe water into potable water. Each 4-gram packet contains ingredients like ferric sulfate (a coagulant) and calcium hypochlorite (a disinfectant). These components work together to remove dirt, bacteria, viruses, and pollutants from up to 10 liters of contaminated water in just 30 minutes — a powerful innovation inspired by technology used in advanced municipal water systems.
Supporting Vulnerable Communities
Since 2012, P&G and World Vision Philippines have been distributing these water purifier packets through the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program across regions like Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur. Many families here, including indigenous Manobo communities, rely on water from the Agusan Marsh or rainwater — sources frequently contaminated after flooding.
Real Change, Real Lives
To date, the program has delivered over 200 million liters of clean water to nearly 50,000 Filipino children and their families, giving them a fighting chance against illness and a healthier future overall. The ongoing work focuses on both disaster-response support and regular access to clean water — allowing kids to stay healthier, attend school regularly, and live fuller lives.
